Our practice

A hospital built on one principle: sight is irreplaceable.

There is a particular kind of eye care that disappears the moment a hospital grows past a single conscience. Patients get passed between consultants. Diagnoses get standardised. The face you saw last week is unavailable for your surgery. Drishti Eye Hospital was built as the opposite of that.

Dr. Gudagur opened these doors on Gokul Road on one conviction: that ophthalmology — where a millimetre separates clarity from blindness — demands to be practised by one surgeon who knows your eye's complete history. Every examination. Every decision. Every procedure.

The technology is current — phacoemulsification, femtosecond LASIK, OCT imaging, laser treatment for glaucoma and retina. The pace is not hurried. Your eyes deserve the time.

Services

Eight specialties. One principle: preserve and restore your vision.

From a first routine eye check to complex vitreoretinal surgery — every plan is explained clearly, every option is named, and the lowest-intervention path that still works is where we begin.

0130 — 45 min procedure

Cataract Surgery

Microincision phacoemulsification with premium IOL implantation. Day-care procedure, fast recovery. Monofocal, toric, and multifocal lens options discussed and costed in advance.

Who needs itClouded vision, glare, difficulty reading, or cataracts confirmed on slit-lamp examination.
02Blade-free, 10 min per eye

LASIK & Refractive Surgery

Femtosecond LASIK and PRK for spectacle and contact-lens independence. Full topography, pachymetry, and dry-eye workup before any refractive procedure is recommended.

Who needs itStable myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism in suitable corneal candidates — assessed thoroughly at the pre-op visit.
03Ongoing management

Retina & Vitreous

Diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment repair, vitreoretinal surgery, and intravitreal injections (anti-VEGF, steroids). OCT and FFA imaging in-house.

Who needs itDiabetes patients (annual mandatory screening), floaters, flashes, sudden vision loss, or distorted central vision.
04Lifelong management

Glaucoma Care

IOP monitoring, visual field testing, OCT nerve-fibre analysis, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), and filtering surgery when indicated. Early detection prevents irreversible nerve damage.

Who needs itFamily history, elevated IOP on routine check, or patients over 40 — especially with risk factors like diabetes or myopia.
05Children, all ages

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Amblyopia (lazy eye) management, squint (strabismus) assessment and surgery, refractive error in children, and routine school vision screening. Early intervention protects lifelong vision.

Who needs itChildren with squint, head tilt, eye-rubbing, poor school performance, or who hold reading material unusually close.
06Medical & surgical

Cornea & Anterior Segment

Keratoconus management (crosslinking, INTACS), dry eye disease, corneal infection, pterygium surgery, and corneal transplantation (DSAEK, PKP) for end-stage corneal disease.

Who needs itRecurrent eye infections, progressively worsening astigmatism, chronic dry or red eyes, or failed contact lens tolerance.
07Day procedure to overnight

Oculoplasty

Eyelid surgery (ptosis correction, entropion, ectropion), dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) for blocked tear ducts, orbital assessment, and periocular tumour management.

Who needs itDrooping eyelids affecting vision, watering eyes, eyelid turning in or out, or any lump or swelling around the eye or orbit.
08First visit, 45 minutes

Comprehensive Eye Examination

Complete diagnostic workup — visual acuity, refraction, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, IOP measurement, fundus examination, and OCT where indicated. A full picture before any recommendation.

Who needs itAnyone. Adults annually after 40; children before school; diabetic and hypertensive patients every year without exception.
Our technology

Modern equipment. No compromise on diagnostics.

OCT imaging, fundus photography, Humphrey visual field analyser, A-scan biometry, and corneal topography — all in-house, all reviewed personally by Dr. Gudagur. The equipment is current; the interpretation is experienced.

Patient journey

Five steps, from your first visit to clear, protected vision.

No two eyes are the same — but every patient follows roughly this path, and every step is something we walk through together.

01

First examination

Visit 1 · 45 minutes

A complete, unhurried examination — visual acuity, slit-lamp, IOP, fundus. Your history, your concerns, your questions. Nothing is rushed.

02

Diagnostic workup

Same visit or next day

OCT, corneal topography, visual fields, biometry — whatever your eyes need to tell the complete story. All interpreted by Dr. Gudagur directly.

03

Diagnosis & plan

Visit 2

A written, clearly explained treatment plan. Every option named, every cost stated upfront. The lowest-intervention path that still works is the one we begin with.

04

Treatment or surgery

On appointment

Whether medical management, laser treatment, or surgery — performed and supervised by Dr. Gudagur personally. No locum, no hand-off to a junior surgeon.

05

Follow-up & annual care

Ongoing

Post-operative care until full recovery. Then a yearly comprehensive review — because preserving vision is not a one-visit affair.

Dr. Joseph Gudagur · Ophthalmologist
The surgeon

An ophthalmologist who believes the surgeon examining you should be the same surgeon operating on you.

MBBS MS (Ophthalmology) Eye Surgeon

Dr. Joseph Gudagur founded Drishti Eye Hospital on Gokul Road on a simple, non-negotiable principle: that your eyes deserve a surgeon who owns the complete arc of your care — from the first slit-lamp view to the last post-operative check. No rotation. No junior hand-offs at the critical moments.

His clinical practice covers the full spectrum of ophthalmology. His special interest sits at the boundary of precision and patience — where a rushed decision can cost someone their sight, and an unhurried one almost always prevents it.

In their own words.

A small selection. Names abbreviated, quotes verbatim and shared with continued permission.

I had been told by two other hospitals that my cataract needed to wait. Dr. Gudagur examined me properly, explained exactly why it needed to be done now, and the surgery was over before I could worry about it.

Prakash R. Patient, Hubli

My daughter had a squint from age two. We brought her here and within three months of treatment, it was corrected completely. The follow-up care was as thorough as the surgery itself.

S
Savitha M. Patient's mother, Dharwad

Twenty years of spectacles — gone in one morning. I drove myself home the next day. I still can't quite believe it.

Awaiting written consent LASIK patient

Diabetic retinopathy caught at exactly the right time. He told me honestly what would have happened in six more months without treatment. I send every diabetic I know to Drishti now.

Questions, answered honestly

What every patient asks before their first visit.

If your question isn't here, it deserves a longer reply than a webpage. Please call us or book a first visit.

How long does cataract surgery take?

The procedure itself takes 20 to 45 minutes per eye. You will be in the hospital for 2 to 3 hours total including preparation, the procedure, and initial recovery. Most patients are discharged the same day, and vision improvement is often noticeable within 24 to 48 hours.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Candidacy depends on corneal thickness, corneal curvature, refractive stability, and dry-eye status. We never recommend LASIK at the first visit — a full pre-operative workup (topography, pachymetry, Schirmer's test) is done first, and we will tell you clearly if LASIK is not the right option for your eyes. There are good alternatives including PRK, ICL, and lens-based correction.

What should I bring to my first eye examination?

Bring your current spectacles and any previous prescriptions, eye test reports, scans, or operation notes. If you wear contact lenses, please remove them 3 days before the visit — they alter corneal shape. Bring a family member if possible; drops may dilate your pupils and affect your vision for 4 to 6 hours afterwards.

Do you treat children and infants?

Yes. Pediatric ophthalmology is one of our core specialties. Children as young as 6 months can be examined reliably for refractive errors, squint, and congenital conditions. Early detection of amblyopia (lazy eye) and squint is critical — the treatment window closes significantly after age 7. We recommend every child have a baseline eye check before starting school.

Is eye surgery covered by insurance?

Cataract surgery is covered by most Indian health insurance plans and Ayushman Bharat. LASIK and cosmetic oculoplasty procedures are generally not covered. We will check your policy with you and provide all documentation needed for cashless claims. Staged payment options are available for procedures not covered by insurance.

How often should I have my eyes examined?

Children: before school entry, and every 2 years if no issues are found. Adults under 40 with no symptoms: every 2 years. Adults over 40: every year. Diabetic and hypertensive patients: every year without exception — retinal damage can be well advanced before it affects vision. If you notice any sudden change in vision, floaters, flashes, or pain: same day.

What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MBBS + MS/MD Ophthalmology) qualified to diagnose eye disease, prescribe medication, perform surgery, and manage all eye conditions. An optometrist holds a degree in optometry (B.Optom) and is qualified to test vision, prescribe spectacles and contact lenses, and screen for common conditions — but does not perform surgery or manage complex eye disease. Dr. Gudagur is an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon.
